ECTS Credits &
Certificate Instructions

Everything student participants need to know about earning academic credit at GAISE 2026.

Up to 3 ECTS 1–3 June 2026 Tampere, Finland

Overview

To receive the 3 ECTS for participation, you will need to complete three assignments. These are explained in detail below. Briefly, you need to complete:

  1. A pre-assignment, which consists of submitting a research document AND peer-reviewing submissions of others.
  2. An in-event assignment, which consists of participating in the Doctoral Research Presentations sessions to present your pre-assignment submissions and give the peer review feedback you have prepared to other participants.
  3. A post-assignment, which consists of a brief report about your experiences at GAISE26.

ECTS for Non-Doctoral Participants

ECTS can also be awarded for participants who are not (current or prospective) doctoral students. All participants can receive 1 ECTS for participating in GAISE26 overall, and 1 more ECTS for submitting the post-assignment, thus receiving a certificate for a maximum of 2 ECTS in total.

There is no "in-event assignment" in this case, and the participation credit simply comes from active participation in the 3-day event. Post-assignment instructions are the same for everyone, on the other hand.

Pre-Assignment

The pre-assignment consists of submitting a document AND reviewing document(s) submitted by someone else.

Your Submission

Submit a research-related document of your choice that is topic-wise related to generative AI in software engineering and that you feel like you would benefit from receiving feedback on. This can be ONE of the following:

  1. A doctoral study plan (max 10 pages)
  2. A research idea/proposal for a study (2–4 pages)
  3. A work-in-progress research paper draft of a paper you are already currently working on

Pick whichever option you consider to be the most relevant to you in your current situation and prepare and submit it. At GAISE26, you will then receive both peer feedback and senior researcher feedback on the document you submit. Therefore, we urge you to submit something you feel that you would benefit from receiving external feedback on.

In the document, you may also indicate what aspects or parts you would specifically like the feedback to focus on.

Peer Review

After the submission deadline, we will distribute the submissions for peer review. Each participant will review one or two submissions made by other participants.

Based on the documents you have been assigned, prepare feedback (notes; comments & questions) for the submissions you have been assigned. The feedback is given orally, live at the event during the Doctoral Research Presentation sessions found in the program. The goal of the feedback is to help the other participant improve their work (e.g., by giving further research ideas, by providing constructive criticism on research design, etc.)

Submission Procedure and Schedule

Submit your document of choice, in PDF format, by Wednesday, May 27 by 23:59 (Helsinki time, EEST, UTC+3). Submissions are done via this Google Forms: open submission form →

We will then assign the peer reviews during Thursday, May 28, and you have until the sessions at the event the following week to conduct your reviews. You will receive the peer review assignments by email (to the email you used to sign up for the event).

Formatting / Template

There is no strict template requirement. Use common sense for font size and spacing. If you are lowering font size just to make it fit, consider shortening the text instead.

Structure the document of your choice into logical sections based on document type, at your own discretion.

Participation & In-Event Assignment

At the event during June 1–3, you will present your submission AND provide your peer feedback to the other participants whose work you reviewed as part of the pre-assignment.

Presentation

Prepare a 5 to 10 minute presentation (preferably with slides) to briefly summarize your idea during the Doctoral Research Presentations sessions (see programme). Each presentation slot is 20 minutes and includes your presentation (5-10 minutes) and feedback and Q&A (10-15 minutes). The main purpose of the presentation is that everyone participating in the sessions will understand the submissions on a general level, in order to understand the feedback discussion that follows and to potentially give additional feedback during it.

Feedback

During the PhD sessions, provide the peer review feedback you have prepared as part of the pre-assignment. Participate in the session, watch the presentations, and give your feedback after the presentation of the person whose work you reviewed.

Remember: as part of your in-event assignment, you need to participate in the session/group you have been allocated to via email, in order to present your work and give feedback to others.

Post-Assignment

Report

After the event, submit a brief (max 2 pages) report about your experiences at GAISE26. In the document, describe your key takeaways from the event. This may include:

  • (a) reflection on the feedback you received on your pre-assignment submission during the event,
  • (b) general reflection on the program as a participant, and/or
  • (c) feedback to us about the event and program.

As with the pre-assignment, there is no strict template requirement. Use common sense for document formatting.

Submission Procedure and Schedule

Submit your post-assignment report, in PDF format, by Tuesday, June 30th (23:59 Helsinki time, EEST, UTC+3).

Submissions are done via this Google Forms: open submission form →

After completing the three assignments, you will receive your certificate in August.

Certification and Academic Records

  • All participants who attend the summer school will receive a Certificate of Participation issued by GPT-Lab.
  • Participants who fulfil the requirements for ECTS will receive a Certificate of Participation stating the number of ECTS they have earned by August 2026. It is the responsibility of the participants to confirm with their home institution how these credits may be transferred into their study plan or reflected in their own Transcript of Records.
