What is GPT-Lab?
Founded in 2023 at Tampere University by Prof. Pekka Abrahamsson, GPT-Lab has grown to be the largest AI research group in Finland consisting of nearly 60 researchers focused on Software Engineering and real-world AI applications.
With teams located in Pori, Tampere, and Seinäjoki, and partners across Sweden, Norway, Brazil, and Tanzania, we’re building one of the largest AI research labs in Europe.
GPT-Lab explores how AI changes Software Engineering and Society.
We build and test AI-driven systems that solve practical problems in collaboration with companies, researchers, and students.
At GPT-Lab, we value sustainable AI – that’s why Green AI and AI Ethichs and Governance are a part of our research. Our work blends research and prototyping with a strong focus on societal impact and usability.

Our mission
At GPT-Lab, we believe the real breakthroughs happen where generative AI meets software engineering — and where technology meets human ingenuity. We’re working on a mission to remove humans from the loop – in a sustainable, responsible way.
From Code to Society. Our work spans eight research pillars — from the technical core of AI to the bigger questions it raises about sustainability, governance, leadership, and ethics.
We don’t see AI as just a piece of technology. It’s shaped by people, by organizations, by the systems we build around it. That’s why our research looks at the whole picture — helping AI develop, get adopted, and get governed responsibly, everywhere it touches society.
Our Locations
With operations in three cities, we stay accessible to collaborators, visitors, and students across the country.
