Adopt an AI Researcher: GPT-Lab collaborates with Pori Energia

GPT-Lab completed a four-week embedded collaboration with Pori Energia as part of the “Adopt an AI researcher” programme. Doctoral researchers Sami Malik and Zeeshan Rasheed located at University Consortium of Pori joined the company to explore how AI could support daily work and long-term development. They worked with eleven business units to observe operations, map processes, and identify where automation, generative AI or agent based systems could bring value. The exploration revealed more opportunities than expected.

According to Pori Energia’s digital development lead Meri Olenius, the collaboration revealed far more AI-applicable functions than expected. As they mapped processes and interviewed teams, the researchers uncovered multiple points where automation, generative AI, or agent-based systems could enhance operations.

“We discovered far more possibilities than expected. The most important insight was the need to stay open to redesigning entire processes instead of replacing only one part with AI. We need a new mindset for how we plan and structure our operations.” reveals Meri Olenius, Lead of digital development at Pori Energia.

The collaboration created value for both sides. Pori Energia gained a clear overview of AI use tailored to real work situations. GPT-Lab researchers gained access to practical challenges and authentic operational contexts in the energy sector. “Adopt an AI researcher” pilot emphasized the importance of cooperation between academia and industry and how it can turn AI research into real value. GPT-Lab continues expanding this collaboration model with new partners in the future.
