AI Learning Takes Off: GPT-Lab and UCS Begin New Study Program

On August 18, 2025, GPT-Lab (Tampere University) and the University Consortium of Seinäjoki (UCS) successfully launched their collaboration around new Generative AI study modules. The first information session drew close to 30 participants, showing strong interest from students and professionals across South Ostrobothnia.

“The classroom ended up filled beyond capacity, which was great to see. It showed that people are genuinely interested in learning about generative AI, not just in theory but in how to use it, and they see it as something worth investing in for the future,” says Juha Ala-Rantala from GPT-Lab.

The initiative is part of the GeTek program, which develops AI competence in the region with the support of the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation. In addition to academic expertise, the program involves industry partners River IT Oy and Wirokit Oy, who help connect research and teaching with real-world applications.

The first modules focus on AI technology foundations and advanced large language model (LLM) usage. Courses will begin next week and continue with further sessions in late October.

Why it matters

  • South Ostrobothnia has shown strong demand for AI training and application.

  • Students gain hands-on skills to apply generative AI in practical contexts.

  • Collaboration strengthens ties between universities, industry, and the local community.
