AI in Education: Unlocking Learning Opportunities or Loopholes?

AI in Education: Unlocking learning opportunities or loopholes? AI reshapes how we learn, teach and operate in Universities.

In a recent Moreenimedia article by Hilma Hämäläinen, professor Pekka Abrahamsson from GPT-Lab, Tampere University highlights how the use of AI in universities is still very much taking shape. As AI is reshaping how we work, study, and generally operate in this modern world, we need some common ground rules and guidelines.

AI brings new ways of learning but also new possibilities for cheating and academic misconduct. So far, universities have largely relied on students to self-report their use of AI. For teachers and educators, detecting and monitoring any misuse is especially challenging since there’s still no foolproof method for identifying AI-generated text. Certain expressions or stylistic patterns, like the use of word “delve” or frequent hyphenation, might hint at AI involvement, Abrahamsson points out. Then again, the way we write and express ourselves is evolving as AI becomes a natural part of how we communicate.

Abrahamsson argues that instead of focusing solely on detecting misuse of AI, we should be focusing on creating equitable ways to support AI-assisted learning. Especially given the widening gap between free and paid, state-of-the-art AI models, it’s a question of equality and strengthening learning for everyone.
