ANSE: AI-Native Software Engineering

Funding

€2.5M (Phase 1, 2025–2027) from Business Finland’s Näytönpaikka programme.

Partners

Tampere University (GPT-Lab) and University of Jyväskylä

Project leads:

Prof. Pekka Abrahamsson (Tampere University, GPT-Lab founder)
Prof. Tommi Mikkonen (University of Jyväskylä)

What it does

ANSE is building a new AI-native method for software development, one designed from the ground up for human–AI collaboration rather than adapted from existing tools. At its core is a neurosymbolic system: generative AI proposes solutions, while a symbolic reasoning layer checks those proposals against architecture constraints, test coverage, and business goals. Design, implementation, learning, and business impact sit in one continuous view instead of separate stages.

ANSE is the first project globally preparing for AI-native systems in software engineering — systems built from the start to run on human-AI collaboration as their foundation, not as an add-on.

Why it matters

Software quality issues and cyberattacks cost an estimated $15 trillion annually worldwide. Current development processes were built for human-only teams; ANSE addresses the shift needed as AI becomes central to how software gets built. Applications range from everyday smart assistants to enterprise-scale business systems, with results expected to strengthen Finland’s position in AI-driven software development.
