Mikko Auranen

Doctoral Researcher

Hello, I’m Mikko Auranen. I work as a specialist at the University Consortium of Seinäjoki, and I’ve recently started as a doctoral researcher.
After spending 15 years in the software industry—first as an entrepreneur and later as a partner—I decided it was time for a new chapter.

Right now, I’m leading a project called AI-BASS (AI-Based Support for Startup Companies), where we’re developing a prototype tool to support startup and micro-enterprise founders in their everyday decision-making. The idea is to use AI—especially language models—to help align short-term actions with long-term strategies, even when things get hectic. The tool will act like a virtual advisor, enriching user input with company-specific context and delivering informed, easy-to-understand suggestions.

My experience as a founder has shown me how hard it is to stay focused on strategic goals when you’re just trying to keep the lights on. That insight shapes my research: I want to build tools that are practical, low-threshold, and genuinely helpful for people facing those real-world challenges. I believe academic research can offer powerful, underexplored solutions for the startup world—especially when guided by lived experience.
